In his guest lecture, Dr. Marc Jan Eumann, State Secretary for Europe and the Media, discusses current challenges faced by the European Union and gives some ideas for necessary reforms.
With 18 million inhabitants and frontiers with Belgium and the Netherlands, North Rhine-Westphalia is a state in the European heartland. Serving as the powerhouse of the German economy, North Rhine-Westphalia belongs to the most vibrant metropolitan regions of the continent. The State Government has fully embraced the idea of a united Europe.

Dr. Marc Jan Eumann is State Secretary for Europe and the Media of North Rhine-Westphalia. His career includes journalism, the Mayor’s Office of Cologne and the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs, North Rhine-Westphalia. Before joining the State Government in 2010, he served fifteen years as a Member of the State Parliament, working as Vice-Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) parliamentary group from 2000 to 2010. He is the Chairman of the Commission on Media and Net Policy of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) executive committee, Berlin.
