Hans Golombek, a long-time senior staff member of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and a great supporter of the Willy Brandt Centre, has received the Bene Merito award.
On the 12th of December 2013 Hans Golombek was awarded with "Bene Merito" which is granted by the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs for supporting Poland's role in the international arena. The ceremony took place in the Polish Embassy in Berlin.
The Polish Ambassador to Germany, Dr Jerzy Margański, highlighted Hans Golombek's achievements, in particular these related to the cooperation and transfer of knowledge between German and Polish universities. The ceremony included an address by Marek Zybura, professor of German literature and culture of the WBC, as well as the speech on new challenges for the Polish-German relations by Krzysztof Ruchniewicz, professor of history and director of the WBC.

For many years Hans Golombek has been engaged in diverse activities in support of the Polish-German cooperation. He contributed a great deal to a creation of dense cooperation networks between academic institutions from both countries. In 1982, Hans Golombek started his work with the DAAD and in the1990's he created the DAAD's Department for East and Central Europe. In 1997, he launched the DAAD branch office in Warsaw and was also its first head. One of the most outstanding achievements of Hans Golombek's was the setting-up of the Willy Brandt Centre for German and European Studies at the Wroclaw University – an interdisciplinary academic institute, which has been strongly influencing the German-Polish academic discourse for longer than ten years now.
